It's time to start preparing for the cold New England temperatures that are knocking on our door! It's important to be sure your heating system is running and heating fuel is adequate to prevent burst pipes. This is a quick note to share important information for both occupied and vacant properties as we head into the winter season.
* Check your heating fuel gauges to ensure there is adequate fuel to keep your heating system running. If you are on automatic delivery, double check the fuel gauge often to make sure delivery is made on time and a delivery hasn't been missed.
* If your oil tank is outside and in the elements, talk to your oil delivery company about including an additive to keep the oil from gelling in the extreme cold, which could cause your heating system to shut down.
* Keep all thermostats in your home set to at least 55 degrees. If your thermostats are electronic/digital, change the batteries to ensure a dead battery doesn't become the cause of having no heat.
* Remove any window air conditioner units. Cover and insulate any wall air conditioner units.
* Be sure to keep your driveway and walkways free of snow and ice. Sand and salt as needed to prevent outside injuries. If you're in need of contacts for snow removal, please reach out to us anytime. Add a floor mat or entry rug inside your home entrances to collect snow and dirt from shoes when people enter.
* Sign up for electrical outage notifications from your electrical company, or coordinate communication with a friend or neighbor, to keep you informed of power outages. When the power is out, so is the heat, unless you have an automatic generator system.
* Take into account preparation for any holiday travel, short or extended time away, which might impact the care of your property.
I am always here to help, so if you have any questions or are in need of local, recommended contractors or service vendors, please reach out anytime. Stay warm and have a wonderful, happy holiday season!
